Mo' Money

It's funny how an emergency like, oh, an $1100 eye surgery can make you rethink your budget & reconsider any frivolous necessary expenses.

Today, the hubs & I will be talking about money. Our money. What seems like a lack of it. How to save it. How to spend it. How to pay things off. How to be frugal. How to correct all of the financial errors from our twenties. Basically, how to become tightwads - something both of us - clearly - are not.

We are following the principles of Dave Ramsey {we enjoy watching his show on the Fox Business Network}. We like his message, his Christian-based approach and his "non-judgemental" attitude. My mom absolutely adores Suze Orman and thinks that I need to read her book, but she scares the heebie-jeebies out of me {and she really shouldn't because she's got some very valid financial points}.

What are some of your budgeting tips & tricks?

Oh girl, I hate talking about money. I know it is necessary, but I would rather stab myself in the eye (probably not good and might require one of those emergency eye surgeries.) :)

I love Dave Ramsey and TOTALLY agree about Suze Orman scaring you. Good luck.

Make sure you read my blog today too.

I read Suze Orman and unless you have a billion dollars in savings...you doomed! She is really scary! I am in the same boat as you! We always say, if only we just lived in a small 2 bedroom condo, we would be RICH! funny how more money you earn, the more you spend! let me know when you find a solution! I have to look into Dave Ramsey. I tend to stay away from financial talk shows because they make me depressed!

Since we bought the house, my husband and I are on a cash budget. We each get a certain amount of money a week (me more since I do the grocery shopping) and you'd be surprised what you can squeeze out of it. Hubs gets his lunch out everyday and I get my clothes or Lallie's shoes when needed. It works great. You just have to sit and figure out how much each gets. You really learn to cook and shop more frugally that way, and I use LOTS of coupons, that helps!

I also try to save each $5.00 bill I get and at the end of the month, I can buy a nice Lilly or something else for me.

This way, we're saving for college, retirement, escrows etc. and still keeping a padding and making decisions on big purchases together (furniture etc.)

We are Dave Ramsey fans. I like Suze Orman, too but I think Dave Ramsey does a better job at outlining the steps you need to take to get out of debt, save, whatever you need to do.

My biggest tip: use cash for groceries. We budget a certain amount each week - when it's gone I can buy no more. We have been doing that for about 3 yrs and I can't imagine not doing it that way. I use coupons - not a ton but if something I normally buy has a coupon I use it. I don't buy anything that is not on sale - really - if you really start to pay attention to your supermarket sales you will see that everything cycles around - probably about every 6 wks or so. I stock up when things are on sale and use what I have stockpiled or do without until the next sale. We don't eat out alot. I try to cook from scratch as much as possible. But keep your eyes open - sometimes mixes, etc are a steal and it's cheaper than scratch.

We each get an 'allowance' each week (cash). Again, when it's gone, it's gone.

We pay most bills on line -most things are about the same amt each month. So we have budgeted everything out (don't forget gifts, vacations & occasional expenses (ie.auto & life insurance)- it gets paid on line, we have our cash, $$ goes into savings from my hubbys check - we are totally automated and just review the budget every so often.

Good luck!!
